Infant - Toddler

“Children learn as they play. Most importantly, in play children learn how to learn.”

- OFred Donaldson

Social and emotional development is the way children learn to build relationships with, get along with, and enjoy the company of others. Children learn about their emotions, feelings and understanding and recognizing their feelings with empathy of others. We foster these development with our Infants in numerous ways, by engaging during diapering and taking our time to create a safe place for the them to play so they learn it’s fun to be around others. As children get older and become toddlers, we continue to promote these skills by spending lots of time reading and talking individually or in groups. Our goal is always to create a safe and welcoming space.

It is necessary to guide children’s positive behaviors to ensure children have an environment that helps promote positive interactions with children. Allowing children to play and grow in a safe and organized environment not only ensures the children’s day runs more smoothly, it also allows the child to feel independent and confident in their choices of play and interactions with their peers.

We guide Infants and Toddlers with challenging behaviors by modeling positive behavior, all while accommodating each child’s temperaments. If an infant in our childcare setting is a mobile infant, we accommodate that and provide ample space for that child to explore. If a toddler is expecting a new sibling and we notice behavioral changes we are aware of that experience taking place and we offer extra one-on-one time with that toddler.

Children develop a strong self of self and self-esteem when they are provided with positive experiences and strong reciprocal relationships from both biological and non-biological relationships. Some ways we support self-concept in our childcare settings can be different for each age group. For infants we respond to their needs consistently to build trust during feeding, diaper changing or play, with toddlers we are able to encourage them to practice age-appropriate skills such as feeding themselves during meals or dressing themselves for park time.
